Club volleyball tryouts: a parent's guide
Club teams practise through the winter and play weekend tournaments in the spring. Vision VC tryouts run in December and January. No one is "cut": every athlete is placed in the right pathway, and athletes who do not join a Vision VC team are placed in the Premier League.
Before tryouts
- Find your age group by birth date (table below)
- Register for your age group and region
- Bring court shoes, knee pads and water
At tryouts
- Coaches look at skills, movement, effort and coachability
- Parents usually watch from the stands or wait outside
- Selection continues until the Last Chance session
After tryouts
- You receive a team or program offer by email
- Talk with your child about the offer, not the list
- Ask the coach how to grow over the season

Tournament days
Volleyball tournaments and travel: what parents should know
Tournament days are long. Teams play pool matches in the morning, then playoff rounds, and often referee or keep score for another match between their own games.
Plan the day
- Arrive 45–60 minutes before the first match
- Expect 6–10 hours at the venue
- Check the schedule the night before; it can change
Packing list
- Uniform, court shoes, knee pads
- Water, lunch and snacks
- Warm layer, charger, folding chair if allowed
Out-of-town trips
- Hotel blocks and travel are shared in advance
- Rule of Two applies to rooms and rides
- Ask about chaperones and curfew
