The Manitoba Bisons’ Run to the National Championship

The Manitoba Bisons men’s volleyball team has put together an impressive season. Competing in the highly competitive Canada West conference, the Bisons finished second place, earning their spot at the U SPORTS Men's Volleyball Championship.

Today, they take the court at nationals to compete against the best university teams in Canada.

One of the standout moments in the Bisons’ playoff run came from Karil Dadashadeh, who delivered an outstanding performance and was named Best Player of the Game in the playoff match that helped secure the team’s momentum heading into nationals.

Karil has been a major presence on the right side, delivering powerful attacks, strong blocking, and key points in crucial moments. When the Bisons needed a point in high-pressure situations, the ball often found its way to the right side.

And more often than not, the play ended with a point for the Bisons.

Why the Right Side Matters in Volleyball

In many ways, the right-side hitter plays one of the most demanding roles on the court.

While outside hitters often receive more sets, the right side carries major responsibilities on both offense and defense.

A strong right-side player must be able to:

Score in difficult situations – When the pass pulls the setter off the net, the right side is often the safest option to keep the play alive and still produce points.

Block the opponent’s top attacker – Right-side players line up against the opposing outside hitter, who is usually the other team’s primary offensive threat.

Balance the offense – Without a strong right-side attack, opposing blockers can overload the left side. A reliable right-side hitter forces the defense to respect the entire net.

One of the reasons Karil’s performance in the playoffs was so impactful was his ability to score both in-system and out-of-system, providing stability to the Bisons’ offense when the team needed it most.

A Season Built on Team Play

While Karil’s playoff performance stood out, the Bisons’ success has been built on complete team play.

Throughout the season the team demonstrated disciplined serve receive, strong defensive coverage, balanced offensive systems, and composure in tight matches.

Finishing second in Canada West is no small achievement. The conference consistently features some of the strongest university volleyball programs in the country.

Earning a place at nationals required the Bisons to compete at a high level throughout the entire season.

Representing Manitoba on the National Stage

Now the Bisons step onto the national stage, representing not only their program but also the broader Manitoba volleyball community.

When local university teams compete at nationals, it inspires young athletes training in club gyms across the province. It shows that with dedication and development, players from Manitoba can compete with the best in Canada.

Nationals Begin Tomorrow!

Tomorrow the Manitoba Bisons begin their run at the U SPORTS Men’s Volleyball Championship.

For the players, this is the moment they have worked toward all season.

With strong team play and key performances like the playoff match from Karil Dadashadeh, the Bisons have already proven they belong on the national stage.

Now they have the opportunity to see just how far this remarkable season can go.
