How to Get on a Recruiter's Radar—Without Saying a Word

How to Get on a Recruiter's Radar—Without Saying a Word

Recruiting doesn't begin when a coach contacts you—it starts with how you show up today.

Why Mindset Comes Before Highlights

When we talk about recruiting, it's easy to focus on the "big" moments—tournaments, championships, emails from coaches, scholarship offers. But ask any college recruiter and they'll tell you: what really gets their attention isn't just the stats or medals. It's the way an athlete shows up in the everyday—how they train, communicate, compete, and carry themselves.

This is the recruiting-ready mindset. And you don't have to be in Grade 11 or 12 to start developing it.

What Coaches Are Actually Watching

At showcases and tournaments, most athletes focus on their performance. But coaches are watching a lot more than the scoreboard. In fact, many of the most impactful recruiting moments happen between the points.

Here's what coaches notice:

  • Do you hustle between drills without being asked?

  • Do you support your teammates after a mistake—even if it wasn't yours?

  • When things go wrong, do you panic or problem-solve?

  • Do you take feedback with eye contact and nod—or with crossed arms?

Athleticism can be trained. Mindset is harder to teach. That's why recruiters look for it early.

Practice Like a Recruitable Athlete

Most athletes don't start thinking like recruits until it's almost too late. But here's a better approach: train with intention now, so that you're ready when the opportunity comes.

What that looks like in real life:

  • Showing up early and helping set up nets without being asked

  • Treating every drill like it matters—even warmups

  • Learning how to lead through your energy, not your volume

  • Asking your coaches how you can grow, not just if you did things right

The earlier you adopt this mindset, the easier everything becomes later. Highlights are easier to build. Confidence is easier to keep. Coaches notice the difference.

Why Our Showcase Is Part of the Process

This is exactly why we run the Volleyball Winnipeg Showcase. It's not just about visibility—it's about learning what it means to be evaluated, and how to own that experience.

Whether you're in Grade 8 or Grade 12, the showcase gives you:

  • Real-time exposure in front of coaches and evaluators

  • Neutral coaching that helps you see your game differently

  • A chance to build your first or next highlight reel

  • Confidence in your ability to perform under observation

You don't need to be 'ready' to attend—you need to be willing to grow.

Start Early. Play Smart. Stay Humble.

Too many athletes wait until they feel like they've "made it" to get serious about recruiting. But the truth is, if you can learn to show up today like someone who deserves to be seen—you won't have to beg for attention later.

Because real coaches recognize real effort. And they're watching more closely than you think.

Being recruitable isn't about your ranking—it's about your readiness.

And readiness is built long before the recruiting calls come in.

That's what our programs and showcases are here to support.
